Consumed By Necessary Distractions

imageThe biblical story of Mary and Martha is one I can personally relate to.  For those not familiar with the story in Luke 10:38, I will briefly fill you in. The sisters Mary and Martha, are the same whose brother Lazarus was called out of the tomb by Jesus after he had been dead for four days.  John 11:1-44.

“Remove the stone covering the tomb.” Jesus ordered. I can just hear the monumental intake of breath as the many mourners gasped at the thought of the dead man in the tomb, in the heat of the Israeli climate. “ He’s been there four days, there will be a stench,”  Martha told Jesus. Wedding Day Blues

Love Duo

With wedding season up ahead I feel this needs to be said.

Ladies, if you feel that you shouldn’t be getting married to the man you will soon say “I do” to:  

Don’t! 

As I flew to Las Vegas that fateful day years ago, I knew in my heart that was not what I wanted to do.  It was a very tiny wedding at one of Las Vegas’ quaint little chapels. The only people present were the preacher, his wife, two witnesses, my soon to be husband, and me.  The struggle within me was so strong that I nervously giggled through the short walk to the altar and through most of the vows. Many years ago I found myself in a very dismal place in my life. After an extremely painful childhood and troubled teens, I was weary of searching for love in wrong places. I thought my life would take a turn for the best when I got married. My new husband had a large family. I hoped to finally gain the love and family I ached for my whole life.

Anxious Yorkie-Poo’s Sleep Restored

imageHimalayan salt-rock lamps are amazing. We own several and we love them. They give an amber- peachy-orangy glow to any room. Once warmed up, a lamp purifies the air and puts out negative ions that give you a sense of relaxation. Like the negative ions the ocean puts out, one reason why it feels so good to be at the beach. According to what I have read, Himalayan salt’s healing minerals also help with lung and bronchial conditions, asthma, allergies and other maladies. Really. No hocus-pocus stuff. It’s effective in that scientific sort of way.

A friend didn’t believe my rock salt lamp was really salt. “Can I lick it?”

The Trouble With A Phone Being So Smart

imageThere is one thing for sure I can tell you about smart phones, they can make one feel…not so smart. My husband and I both needed to upgrade our phones. I had a Samsung slide key phone, his flip-phone was so old, I assumed it came to America on The Mayflower. A local Verizon dealerships ran a special. “Get a brand new Samsung Android 4G smart phone, worth hundreds of dollars, FREE with a two year contract.”

The Time Bandit

imageI have had it with that time bandit. That sneaky varmint gets me every time.
I make my plans with very good intentions by blocking out sections of time
on my schedule. I need these blocks of time to work on my book, to work on
my blog, and to work on my quilt. That stealthy bandit is so darn
manipulative, it outwits me time and time again by sneaking bits of this and

Lighthouse Reflection

I sat at an eyeglass store, waiting my turn with the optometrist after choosing frames. I needed a prescription for reading glasses. While looking around I got a quick glimpse of this frumpy-looking middle-aged woman, with windblown hair and a tummy bubbling out. She slouched in a chair as if she was at home in her pajamas. Thinking she looked familiar, I did a double-take and realized I did know her. That woman was me! A mirrored reflection of me.

Give It A Rest Already

As the year 2012 closed, so did another chapter of our lives. Many of us
made New Year’s resolutions. Now that we are in March, have they been
forgotten? Don’t feel too bad if you they have, most of us forget them
before January is gone. We set goals with every intention of accomplishing
them, but then sidetracked with everyday stuff, our goals get lost or we
leave projects halfway finished.

But you know, sometimes things work the other way. Our desire to finish a
project can backfire and become an obsession, taking over our lives. Here is
an example.

An Unforgettable Deed

I became an unwed mom in the summer of 1980 at 23 years of age. Then my babysitter quit abruptly, leaving me stunned and stranded. I depended on the childcare in order to work my full time job, my only means of support. I drove to my mother’s house and asked if she’d watch my baby until I found another babysitter. Our relationship had been strained as far back in my early childhood as I could remember, but I really believed she’d help me out considering the urgency of the situation. Of all people, I felt sure she would understand. Her mother helped her care for me when I was a baby and she was an unwed mother.
