It’s not something I talk about often, but when I do tell people I was born in Havana, Cuba; the first thing they ask is, “Was your dad in the military?” When I tell them that he wasn’t, their next comment almost always is, “Why were you born there? You don’t look Cuban!” With that in mind, I suppose my cousins “look even less Cuban” than I do. As babies, each of my cousins qualified for any Gerber Baby look-alike contest, with their blond curls and big blue eyes.
My paternal grandparents were directly from Spain. My maternal ancestry is also from Spain with a few drops of French in there somewhere. What most people don’t know is that in 1492, Columbus claimed the island for the Kingdom of Spain. Cuba remained under Spain’s ruling until 1898. Most of the original Native Americans living in Cuba died because they were subjected to harsh slavery, or died from Eurasian diseases. A thousand or so survived, many escaped into the mountains. Thousands were then cruelly ripped from their homes and families in Africa to replace the lost native slaves. Cuba’s ethnicity is somewhat different from the typical Latin America people imagine. Inspired by scriptures about the sparrow and the lyrics to the song, His Eye Is on the Sparrow, I chose my blog’s name, His Eye Is On This Sparrow. I then wanted an image to represent this name and theme.
After much thought, I came up with an eye to represent God’s eye, then drew a sparrow
reflected in the eye. I used coloring pencils to fill in the colors. I have looked at this image at least 50 times, and only saw the lowly, common sparrow. Yesterday, a blogger friend surprised me with a comment. George made a comment on the post God’s Hand Is Mightier Than A Falling Tree, about a tree that fell on my car years ago. Then, she pointed out something I never noticed about the image I drew and chose as my avatar. You can see the conversation below. Continue reading

I was daydreaming while washing lunch dishes when I heard the front door slam.
“MOM! MOM! You have to come outside! A tree fell on the car!” Continue reading

The Liebster Award is one of many awards available to encourage new bloggers, and to help us discover new blogs to enjoy. It’s a great way to link hearts with other bloggers!
Many thanks to Rhonda of Dizzy Stir for thinking of me and considering my blog for nomination. It’s an honor to be thought of. May your efforts be twice blessed, Rhonda! I truly enjoy her tongue-in-cheek posts, humor and creativity. Though I don’t know her, she seems like someone anyone would want as a neighbor. Have you heard of ALDD? It stands for Adolescent Logic Deficit Disorder. It is a name I came up with to keep my sanity when I had no other way to explain my teenager’s complete lack of logic. Somewhere out there in a medical journal, I know there exists the scientific name for this adolescent condition. You may even recognize your teenager in this post.
When my son was about 16 years old, he got his first vehicle. It wasn’t much to speak of and certainly not a chick-magnet, but then since when did Jonathan need a magnet. He came out of the womb magnetized. The ladies at our church nursery called him, “The Flirt.” His friendly nature and dimply smile attracted many people. Continue reading

“Life is like photography, we develop from the negatives.” This had been handwritten on a white board at my chiropractor’s office. I ran into that saying another time that week, which prompted me to include it in my post. Continue reading

I have had it with that time bandit. That sneaky varmint gets me every time.
I make my plans with very good intentions by blocking out sections of time
on my schedule. I need these blocks of time to work on my book, to work on
my blog, and to work on my quilt. That stealthy bandit is so darn
manipulative, it outwits me time and time again by sneaking bits of this and
parts of that in front of me. Continue reading

As I said in the About page, I loved to write when I was young. I wrote poems and silly stories. Even when I wasn’t writing, my mind was creative with words. When my kids were young they loved my made up stories. I’d make one up on the spur-of-the-moment, winging it as I went along then forget the details when they’d beg me to retell it. Each time I’d tell it differently. They would say something like, “No Mom, the giant lived on the mountain, not in the forest!” And so on. I had as much fun hearing them correct me as I had telling the stories. Continue reading
