Shine on!

imageWhen we look at the bright glistening ball in the sky at night, we forget that the moon is a huge hunk of grey rock that does not have a light of its own.  Its silvery glow comes from the sun’s brilliant rays reaching the face of the moon which then reflect off, giving us a nightlight in the sky.

There are some nights that the moon brightens up the whole landscape around us.  It is especially spectacular when there is snow on the ground.

Sometimes we only see a quarter-moon, a half-moon, a three-quarter moon, or that sliver some call God’s finger nail.

At times, we only see a partial moon reflection because the sun’s light is blocked by our world, planet Earth.  As the world revolves around the sun, sometimes it gets in the way of the sun’s rays, only allowing part of the sun’s light to be reflected off the face of the moon.

The dark side of the moon where the light of the sun doesn’t reach is cold and dark.

I thought of how much this applies to a Christ-follower’s life.

2 Corinthians 4:6 “For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”

A  Christ-follower has no light of their own, but rather reflects the light of God in their life.

John 8:12 “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

The Son-light, the light of Jesus,  shines on and in their life, but the volume of light that reflects off of the Christ-follower depends on the extent in which the shadow of the world blocks that light.  Sometimes cares of our life, arguments with a spouse or other person, work situations, our goals and dreams, or problems block a good portion of that Son-light till there is only a sliver reflection of our God.

Matthew 5:14-16 “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Another thing I noticed.  Light doesn’t only illuminate the area around it but it also gives warmth.  We tend to equate warmth with love.  “He is such a warm person.”  We say of somebody when we mean they are loving.

Just like the sunshine warms the world and the moon, the love of the Son’s light warms our hearts and is meant to pass on to others.

Psalm 36:9 “For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.”

Proverbs 4:18 “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”

The light of Jesus becomes visible then as we reflect the love and glory of God. Without it we are like the dark side of the moon!

2nd Corinthian 4:6-7 “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.”

The treasure Paul speaks of is the light and glory of God that lives in our hearts, we are the earthen vessels.

Isaiah 60:1-3 “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.”

Psalm 27:1 “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

Ephesians 5:8 “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord:  walk as children of light”

1 Peter 2:9 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light”

1 John 1:5 “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”

Let it shine. Let it shine. Let it shine!

  1. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine:)

  2. Lovely scriptures. In essence, we have to absorb and reflect the light of God to others. Blessings.

  3. I liked the parallels you drew from the moon, God’s light and us. Very thought-provoking. One thing I love about God is that, unlike the moon, He doesn’t have a “dark” side. With Him there is no variation or shadow due to change. Hallelujah!

  6. Yes!!!! And no matter how heavy and dark our darkness is, it takes only the tiniest bit of light to banish the darkness. Have a blessed day.
