Happy Valentine’s Day Friends! I wanted to share a beautiful story that has gone viral on Facebook because this story exemplifies the true meaning of what it means to LOVE. Indeed, everything in life depends on our ability to love.
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus was asked
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Jesus replied.
Matthew 22:36-40 NIV
Recently on Facebook there was a touching video from Bronson, Florida that brought tears to my eyes. Three beautiful young men, who looked to possibly be in their early twenties, helping an elderly and very vulnerable couple. The husband, himself barely capable of walking on his own, was trying to help his physically unstable wife get into their car but could no longer offer the strong arms he once had. These young men came along and stood around the woman, who looked like she could easily topple over and almost did; and patiently helped the woman get into her seat. Their faces humble, with an expression of true empathy, they closed the door and handed the husband her walker, then appeared to wait to make sure the husband was able to get to the driver’s seat on his own.
I had great respect for these amazing and tender hearted boys, and couldn’t help but think someone, parents perhaps, had left a compassionate imprint in their lives. The fact that the young men are black and the elderly couple white makes it even more beautiful in this prejudice saturated world in which it seems people are pitted against each other because of racial tension. If only we could drop our masks, our prejudices, and be like these boys. If only we could see the other person- regardless of race, gender, faith- the way Jesus saw people when he walked our planet. What a beautiful world this would be.
Thank you Jesus for people like these young men who truly portray what it means to love, and may they be blessed.
