To My Brother Mario

imageTo my dear brother Mario,

I just wanted to let you know that though we didn’t grow up together or have a chance to build brother-sister memories…

and you never made me cry…

or pull my hair…

or fought with me…

or drove me crazy…

or watched me succeed…

or saw me fail and laughed…

or scolded me… Continue reading

When it Comes to Meds, Study Suggests You Feel What You Believe

Knowing I suffer from chronic migraines, my neighbor dropped off a newspaper article on a recent study titled,

“Study: Thinking positive helps migraine drug work,” by Lauran Neergaard AP, a medical writer.

The article is about a study that proposes that what a patient expects out of a migraine medication will make a huge difference in the results that patient gets from their meds.

Sixty-six migraine patients were recruited for the study, some were given placebos (dummy meds) in an effort to measure the amount of real med related pain relief vs. the amount of relief from patient’s confidence because of their doctor’s positive comments about the meds.

In the article, Ted Kaptchuk, a Harvard professor, suggests that each word the patient is told about their medication is just as important as the actual prescription.

After over 450 headaches were analyzed, researchers concluded how essential it was for doctors to prudently select their words to their patients when subscribing a powerful drug; as the doctor’s message could make or break the medicine’s benefits. Continue reading

Unwelcome Doggy Surprise

Oliver (white) and his sister Sofi

Oliver (white) and his sister Sofi

Oliver has been one of the best dogs I have ever had.  I knew immediately he was the right one when I saw him.

If only finding a human life companion was that uncomplicated.

It was a terrible time of my life then, and I was desperate for a buddy. I knew a puppy would help chase the blues away.  I drove—one hour, one way— for the puppy I wanted at a semi-affordable price.  I wanted a girl puppy, and planned on naming her Olivia.

When I got to the pet shop, there was a litter of five white, adorable, eight week old Peekapoos.

The only girl was too yappy.  She yapped in her high-pitch bark anytime anyone got near the kennel, and would not shut up until they walked away.  Continue reading

Celebrate Jesus This Christmas

imageDon’t let the world dictate your Christmas with its pressure to buy this and that at every turn.  Of all the toys and the gifts given this year, most will be forgotten or broken by next Christmas.  But, what is really going to matter in fifty or one hundred years? Or a thousand years!   Continue reading

It Hurts Us More Than it Hurts Them

imageThere once was a man named Joe who was filled with a great deal of bitterness.

Whenever Joe thought of Dan, he became enraged.  Dan greatly cost Joe when he robbed him in a business partnership.

Whenever Joe thought of his neighbor Lucy, he resented the way she raked most of her fall leaves into his yard, year after year.  He had seen her do that himself, yet when he pointed it out she denied it.   Heat rose up his shirt collar when she worked in her yard.

He wanted to beat the daylights out of his neighbor Sam, across the street.  Sam borrowed a perfectly working snow blower and returned it broken, after he cleared his rocky driveway more than once.  Sam then told Joe the blower never worked. Continue reading

If a Tree Falls…

imageIf a ninety foot tree falls in a very large front yard and leans towards a house, what are the chances it will be kept from hitting the house by the one lone tree planted fifteen feet from the house?

Only God knows, but that is exactly what happened.

In April of this year when I wrote God’s Hand Is Mightier Than A Falling Tree I had no idea I would be writing about another one of God’s falling tree miracles so soon. Continue reading

God Also Uses The Phone

imageThe article below was posted on BookLovers1 blog. It is a phenomenal article.  When I read it, it immediately brought to mind my own similar story.

A Call From God

One Saturday night, a pastor was working late and decided to call his wife before he left for home.  It was about 10:00 PM, but his wife didn’t answer the phone.  The pastor let it ring many times.  He thought it was odd that she didn’t answer but decided to wrap up a few things and try again in a few minutes.  When he tried again, she answered right away. He asked her why she hadn’t answered before, and she said that it hadn’t rung at their house.  They brushed it off as a fluke and went on their merry ways.

The following Monday, the pastor received a call at the church office, which was the phone that he’d used that Saturday night.  The man that he spoke with  wanted to know why he’d called on Saturday night.  The pastor couldn’t figure out what the man was talking about. Continue reading

An Unlikely Dream

Joseph wasn’t unlike some teenagers of today.  His father’s overt favoritism left him with that strong sense of entitlement—

“I really am all that.”  “It really is all about me.”

Jacob, Joseph’s father, AKA Israel, made Joseph an expensive and fancy coat to–well–die for.  Almost.

God had plans to use Joseph to save the nation of Israel, but first Joseph needed a humbling period.

Joseph needed to mature.  The enrollment into the University of Hard Knocks began. Continue reading

Grieving Forefathers

imageThis amazing image was captured by Amanda Ahren and Brian Husmann on their drive past Mount Rushmore the morning of the day it opened after being closed for two weeks due to government shut-down.  It was posted on Megan Ahren’s facebook page. As of yesterday early evening, this post had gone viral with over 12,000 shares.

The symbolism is incredible considering what is going on with our nation and our government.

God Bless America.  May He continue to shed His grace on this country!

Need Help Liking The Bible?

imageHappy Saturday everybody.

When I find something of great value I like to share it.

That is why I have spent countless hours telling stories of how God has transformed me from a person who felt meaningless and unwanted to a person who realizes that God, the Creator of the universe, the All Mighty, All Powerful God–is also my Father.

He redeemed this unwanted, forsaken, sinful, selfish, forgotten, fatherless self–ME–into His kingdom through the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son.

So now I can say,

“I got a Daddy!” Continue reading
